IDEAS Foundation, on the occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day, urges businesses and institutions to end existing salary discrimination between men and women, which, according to Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Commission, stands at 17.1% in Spain and at 18% in Europe. Estonia shows the biggest difference, with a salary gap of 30% between men and women with the same job, and Italy the lowest with only 4.9%.

IDEAS Foundation believes that this salary gap, to which we can add the fact that women generally accept worse-paid jobs, is unacceptable. Women frequently feel obliged to accept part-time contracts, and abandon or temporarily interrupt their careers when they have children.

In addition, IDEAS joins the International Labour Organization (ILO) in their message warning today that some companies are taking advantage of the impact caused by the crisis and economic recession to get rid of women who have expressed their intention of getting pregnant or who simply claim their right to balance their professional and personal life.

IDEAS Foundation also points to Equality as one of the key values to exit the crisis and congratulates itself for the implementation of the European Observatory on Violence against Women, an initiative of the Spanish Presidency of the EU.
